GREG HANNAN
“Over the years a focus has emerged in my painting, and it’s about pushing to a place beyond safety and familiarity.
It might be conceptual, focussing on an area of discomfort and seeing what it throws up, or it might be to do with materials, using a medium to capture something to which it might not seem suited.
It’s not easy to occupy that space, but I only really feel that a piece is successful if I’ve pushed past a boundary and discovered something that’s new to me".
Greg Hannan is a British painter, primarily working in acrylic, who grew up in England on the Kentish coast in Folkestone and lived a decade in London after studying philosophy in Bristol. He studied illustration at Camberwell but quit part way. Over the next ten years he kept sketchbooks for drawing but it wasn’t until he left London that he decided to turn to painting. He was bored of the safe familiarity of the marks he made with pencil or pen and the fresh challenge of painting lit something in him that he’ll never look back from. Now based in Lisbon, where the coast sometimes reminds him of home.
