“Over the years a focus has emerged in my painting, and it’s about pushing to a place beyond safety and familiarity.

It might be conceptual, focusing on an area of discomfort and seeing what it throws up, or it might be to do with materials, using a medium to capture something to which it might not seem suited.

It’s not easy to occupy that space, but I only really feel that a piece is successful if I’ve pushed past a boundary and discovered something that’s new to me".
